PROTOTYPE HISTORY
From the mid 1800’s until the 1950’s, Stock cars were used to carry livestock from the farm to the market. Stock cars were known for their "slat" design, giving ventilation for the animals during travel.
Livestock shippers were constantly concerned about maintaining the health of the animals in transit. So, shippers sent along "drovers", men designated to look after their livestock, on most journeys. Large shipments of livestock required adding a special caboose, called the Drover’s caboose, to accommodate these extra men.
Today, stock cars are not in as much demand as faster methods of travel and better methods of food preservation have been developed. However, stock cars will always remain as one of the quintessential cars from the golden age of railroading.
